After independence – Scenarios for South Sudan and (North) Sudan
Panel discussion (in English)
South Sudan’s independence will begin on 9 July 2011. In January this year, the people of Southern Sudan decided in favor of its independence in a referendum. This referendum in many ways marks the ‘completion’ of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the central government in Khartoum and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), which in 2005 had ended the year-long civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan.
Is there a real chance of sustainable peace? How will conflicts develop? What is the political and economic future of South Sudan and (North) Sudan going to look like? Which role will civil society play?
The following experts will shed light on these questions from their respective perspective and will be offering scenarios for discussion:
• Mohamed Gamal, General coordinator of New Sudan Civil Society Access, The Hague
• Johannes Lehne, East Africa Department, German Foreign Office
• Mathias Mogge, Executive Director Programmes, Programmes and Projects, German Agro Action.
• Peter Nickson Deng, Deputy Head of GOSS (Government of Southern Sudan) Mission in Brussels
• PD Dr. Elke Grawert, BICC
Moderator: Dr. Michael Ashkenazi, BICC
